Andhra Pradesh Student Allegedly Throws Acid On Lecturer For Refusing To Marry Her

Guntur (South) DSP, K. Narasimha stated that Venkatramana, the lecturer who was attacked, has suffered injuries on his face.

The Times of India reports that the incident took place on Saturday, outside a government polytechnic college at Nallapadu in the Guntur district. The report also states that the act was, according to the police, an act of "revenge" as the teacher refused to marry her.

Although the girl's identity was concealed, the police have identified her as Soujanya, a student at Andhra University.

"Wearing 'burqua' to hide her identity, Soujanya waited at the gate of the government polytechnic college at Nallapadu, where Venkataramana is a lecturer and threw acid on him when he came out during lunch hour," Guntur (South) DSP, K Narasimha, told PTI, in the TOI report.

"In the process to resist her bid, some drops of acid fell on her cheek," an officer said, also stating that both, the victim and attacker, have been admitted to Government General Hospital (GGH).

The DSP also stated that Soujanya used to be a student of Venkataramana at Narasaraopet, where they allegedly engaged in a relationship, and agreed to get married. But soon after she left to study her post graduation course at Andhra University. The report also added that, Venkataramana got married to another woman last year, and that he was reportedly avoiding Soujanya. DSP K. Narasimha stated that a case about the incident will be lodged soon.

This attack comes just days after acid attack survivors, who were on a hunger strike in Delhi, reportedly accused the police of assaulting them.
