Here's What You Should Think About Before You Go To Cuba

The travel expert and author of Travel as a Political Act spoke with BuzzFeed News about how to travel responsibly to socially and politically complex places.

On the one hand the tropical country is famously beautiful and unique among Caribbean cultures, while on the other it's still ruled by the Castro family and has been called out for human rights violations. It remains a difficult destination, even if actually getting there is becoming easier.

But for travel writer Rick Steves, that isn't a reason to stay away. Steves is best-known for his European guidebooks and long running TV show, Rick Steves' Europe, and is also the author of Travel as a Political Act . The book delves into the complexities and rewards of traveling to traditionally difficult places and builds on Steves' experiences in Central America, the Middle East, Africa, and elsewhere. His program on Iran also was nominated for an Emmy, and he has been hard at work most recently working on a show about travel to Palestine.

All of which is to say that Steves — who is now planning his first visit to Cuba — knows a thing or two about travel to places that are better known in the U.S. for their challenges than their tourist infrastructure.

In light of the U.S. decision to relax restrictions to Cuba, Steves spoke to BuzzFeed News about how to visit difficult places, what Americans should keep in mind, and how travel can help historically divided people build bridges.

"For years we've been taking groups to Turkey and for years I've had people saying I shouldn't be promoting tourism to Turkey because it's endorsing the human rights abuses of its government. But the intangible value of connecting people to people is so important in so many ways.

"I just think that the value of people to people travel trumps the value of boycotting some government that's got bad policies. I think it's kind of hypocritical for us to be upset with other countries without being upset with our own government because we do a lot of things that would merit boycotting also."

Gun Used To Kill Argentinian Prosecutor Had Only His DNA On It

Alberto Nisman was found shot to death in his apartment on Jan. 18. His death came just hours before he was going to testify before congress about allegations that President Christina Fernandez protected Iranians accused of orchestrating a 1994 car bombing. The bombing happened at Jewish center in Buenos Aires.

Investigators tested the gun, but announced Friday that they only found trace amounts of Nisman's own DNA, Viviana Fein said, the Associated Press reported. Investigators also said Friday that a security camera in Nisman's building was not working at the time of the shooting.

Investigators looking into the death initially said "all signs point to suicide." That conclusion was met with skepticism, and the investigation came under scrutiny when it was revealed that Security Secretary Sergio Berni arrived at Nisman's apartment before police.

Then last week, President Fernandez called it "the suicide that (I am convinced) was no suicide." The government later said it suspected the death was the work of rogue agents from its own intelligence services.

A lover of both hip-hop and photography, Verhoeve found a creative way to meld his passions. "I started on a whim right after Christmas and told myself if I could do it for 50 pictures in a row I’d consider it a pretty decent run," he told BuzzFeed News.

Verhoeve's been a fan since the early '90s. "Growing up, I would get hip-hop CDs (remember those!?) from the library (remember those?!) and dub them onto cassettes, make pause tapes from the radio and watch Yo! MTV Raps past my bedtime," Verhoeve said.

Ohio Will Have No Executions In 2015

Due to ongoing litigation and in order to give state officials time to implement a new execution protocol, Gov. John Kasich’s administration moved all 2015 executions to 2016.

WASHINGTON — All Ohio executions scheduled for 2015 were moved to 2016 on Friday, according to information released by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction.

The move by Gov. John Kasich's administration was made, according to the department, in response to pending orders in ongoing federal court litigation over the state's execution protocol, to allow the department time to adopt and implement the state's new execution protocol, and "to provide DRC adequate time to secure a supply of the new execution drugs."

Ohio has not conducted an execution for more than a year, since Dennis McGuire's execution on Jan. 16, 2014. Witnesses to McGuire's execution — the first of three in the U.S. in which complications were detailed in 2014 — said he "appeared to be gasping for air for 10 to 13 minutes," as CNN reported at the time.

At the time, the state used a two-drug combination: midazolam and hydromorphone.

Midazolam was also in use during executions with complications in Oklahoma and Arizona and is at the center of a pending Supreme Court case out of Oklahoma.

In addition to the ongoing litigation before U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Frost, inmates also filed a new lawsuit in December, challenging a new law that makes elements of the execution process in Ohio secret.
