Israeli forces said dozens of tunnels had been built under Shijaiyah, snaking their way towards Israeli communities just to the north and east of Gaza. During the 50-day war fought between Israel and Gaza, Israeli air strikes and artillery shells repeatedly hit Shijaiyah.
2,133 Palestinians were killed in Gaza during the conflict, and 71 Israelis, most of them soldiers.
