Jon Stewart paid tribute to Egyptian Satirist Bassem Youssef at the start of The Daily Show on Monday, just hours after Youssef announced that he had to cancel his wildly popular program, "El Bernemag," because of political pressure.
Stewart's show was on break last week when former General Abdel Fatah El Sisi (who oversaw President Mohammed Morsi's ouster in July 2013) won a highly disputed presidential election by a landslide. Monday's episode began with a critical recap.
"Sisi says, 'I will show my people what a powerful and courageous leader I am — by making sure that guy doesn't make fun of our sectarian violence, 14% unemployment, and hyperinflation food prices. Priorities!'"
After an ancient Egypt joke, Stewart ended seriously: "The point is that Bassem Youssef and his team did a tremendous show under harrowing conditions, and while they're not on the air for now, their work will continue to inspire us all here at this show."
